This instrument was originally an open back banjo, circa early '60's. The resonator, co-ordinator rod, and D tuners were added after the fact.

I believe that this was a Vega Folk Ranger model, apparently created in the early '60's to exploit the folk music craze which was happening at that time (Kingston Trio, etc.). It looks like they hurriedly cobbled together an instrument design to utilize components on hand, with an eye toward keeping costs low. Note the guitar-style tuners. The neck and rim are good quality items, but Vega cut costs by eliminating the co-ordinator rods, making the instrument structurally weak (as originally built). Ornamental neck inlays are minimal. The resonator and unusual D tuners came from the Ode banjo company.
I have owned this instrument for more than 45 years.
