Wurlitzer Trumpet

Small Wurlitzer.jpg

This is a Wurlitzer B flat silver finish trumpet, probably dating back about 80 years.  There were many of these imported by Wurlitzer (the organ people?) in the early 20th century from eastern Europe.  This was before Japan and China entered the import scene.  When played by an accomplished trumpeter, the tone of this instrument can approach the quality sound of a goat with its tail caught in a screen door.  It is a truly awful instrument, suitable only for collection.

I doubt that the poster of this article is a professional trumpet player. I am, and inherited a Wurlitzer C trumpet with crooks for Bb and A from my father who won it in a composition contest in the 1930s. I've had the horn restored, and it plays as well as my Schilke and Yamaha C trumpets. It's different in tone quality, more like a French instrument of that period, light and sweet. However, to consign all Wurlitzers to the garbage heap is rather silly.
